Ohio has recently updated its attendance laws, with a renewed focus on supporting families and intervening early whenever attendance concerns arise. We want to make sure you have the information you need to help your student stay on track.

What You Should Know:

• All Missed Hours Count Toward Chronic Absenteeism

• Under the new regulations, every minute a student misses school - whether excused or unexcused - contributes to their total chronic absenteeism count.

• A student is considered chronically absent if they miss 10% or more of the total required school hours (100 hours) over the course of the school year. This is roughly equivalent to 2-3 days missed per month.

• Unexcused Hours Count Toward Habitual Truancy. Ohio House Bill 96 defines habitual truancy based solely on unexcused hours. The thresholds are:

What to Expect:

• Early Communication: The school is now required to notify families once a student reaches 5% of missed school hours (roughly 50 hours) for any reason. Our goal is to support your family and help address any barriers to attendance, including transportation or medical concerns.

• Documentation Matters: While excused absences still count toward chronic absenteeism, proper documentation helps protect your child from reaching a habitual truancy threshold.

• Attendance Is Tracked in Hours: Arriving late or leaving early also adds up - these instances accumulate toward a student's total missed hours, just like full-day absences.
